"Air, Fire, Water and Moon..." by Natalie Adams

four old watercolours i did for some of Tolkien's characters from the Silmarillion - from top to bottom; Ilmaree, Arien, Uinen and Tilion.

Ilmaree - handmaiden of the Valar, Tolkien did not say much about her in the book, so a name is all i have, sorry!

Arien - navigator of the Vessel of the Sun, fire-sprite and lover of Tilion - see below - it is said that her eyes shone with such bright fire that not even the Valar could hold her gaze, pretty cool huh?!

Uinen - one of the Vanyar/lesser Valar, wife to Osse, Master of the Seas and storms - along with her spouse, Uinen is woshipped by all mariners alike, as she is the only one with the power to calm Osse out of his furies, which cause many of the storms at sea that are so perilous to sailors! (basically, she is the only one who is able to calm his destructive temper tantrums! how sweet)

Tilion - navigator of the Vessel of the Moon, and lover of Arien - Tolkien, in all his wonderful literary talents, describes at one point in the Silmarillion how he alters his course across the sky every once in a while to meet with his lover, and this meeting between Sun and Moon is what we no call an Eclipse - it is details like this that make me love Tolkien's works so much, how romantic!
